Pujols Sets Spring Training as Contract Deadline

by @ 7:36 am. Filed under 2011 Cardinals

Yes, for a lot of people he’s our favorite player but at this point,Albert Pujols is putting the Cardinals in a bind.  The team will sign him to a big extension but until we know how much that’s going to be, the team has no cost certainty.  So we can’t let him go, but at least from what we’ve seen, there’s been no back and forth so until we get Pujols locked up, signing some of our other top notch players is going to be tough.

Anyway, this all made the news because Pujols said that if there’s no deal in place by the start of spring training, then contract talks will be off the table.  So if things weren’t quickly before, they’re going to have to speed up soon because that’s just over a month away.  I’ve heard everything from 10 year, $300 million to a nine year deal being bounced around but all I know is, getting past this is going to be huge for the team because it will bring some certainty to what their costs are going to be moving forward.

Cardinals Top Ten Prospects

by @ 10:32 am. Filed under 2011 Cardinals

Baseball America recently unveiled their Cardinals top ten prospect list and topping the list is 2009 first round draft pick Shelby Miller.  Miller had 24 starts at Low-A and he was pretty dominating with 140 strikeouts and 33 walks in 104 innings.  We’ll get a look at this blue chip come spring training and there’s a chance he skips High A and pitches for Double A in 2011.

Number two is the Cards second round pick in 2010, Zach Cox.  Cox signed enough to get a few swings in the Gulf Coast League and he’ll get his first full season of pro ball this year.  He had a nice AFL so that might even allow the Cardinals to speed up his ascent through the system.

Number three is Dominican hurler Carlos Martinez who will be 19 all season.  He was lights out in twelve starts for the DSL Cardinals and there’s a chance they could put him on a full season club despite his youth.  Tyrell Jenkins (2010 draft pick, only 18 year old pitcher) and Allen Craig (major league ready outfielder) round out the top five.
