News, Notes and Historical Information on the St. Louis Cardinals

It’s a drag when the Cardinals when seven out of ten, but still lose ground to the red hot Brewers. As it stands, the Cardinals have to make up five games in the final month and a half. The Wild Card is in play, but it’s just as far out of reach because the Braves have the same record as the Brewers. Regardless, unless the Cardinals go on a huge tear, it’s unlikely we’ll need to worry about MLB playoff tickets this year.
Yesterday, Edwin Jackson pitched a solid game and he picked up his second win since joining the team. He lasted only 5 1/3 innings though so the Cardinals, in true Tony LaRussa form, used five relievers to get through the final 3 2/3 innings. Dotel was sharp with four strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings while Fernando Salas pitched a shutout ninth to close out the game.
Albert Pujols had three hits, including his 29th home run of the season. Yadier Molina was a perfect three for three while David Freese went two for three with a pair of runs.
The Cardinals get the sinking Pirates next. Jake Westbrook gets the start in the opener tonight.
