Cardinals Shut Out Astros, Clinch Wild Card Spot

by @ 11:04 pm. Filed under 2011 Cardinals

What a September and I never thought I’d be thinking about Cardinals playoff tickets.  The Cardinals were pretty much left for dead but a great month combined with a wicked collapse by the Braves and the Cardinals find themselves in the playoffs with their 90th win of the season.  Of the four games that had an impact on either league’s wild card, this was the least dramatic.  The Cardinals put a five spot on the board in the first inning against the worst team in baseball and the rest was history.

Chris Carpenter went the distance and he struck out eleven in the two hit shutout.  He gave up two singles and one walk and that was it.  He needed only 105 pitches to get the job done.

Allen Craig continued to rake.  He went two for five with a home run and two runs scored.  David Freese also had a nice day at the plate.  He went two for four with two doubles and three runs.

The bad thing is, the Cardinals get the best team in baseball in the Phillies in their NLDS series.  Things kick off in Philly on Saturday.
