Albert Pujols Continues to Hit in Cardinals Series Win Over Giants

by @ 5:31 pm. Filed under 2006 Season

Barry Bonds might be stuck at 714, but Albert Pujols continues to amaze.  I’m still kind of floored that pitchers continue to challenge him.  He’s on pace for around 150 walks, and while that’s impressive, it’s nowhere near what Bonds was drawing in his MVP years.

Things didn’t start off all that great in this series though.  Mark Mulder left the game after six innings down only 3-1 but the pen got hit hard and the Giants scored six runs in the eighth inning.  Mulder dropped to 5-2 on the season.

Yesterday, the Cards got back on track.  Albert Pujols set the stage with a three run shot in the first inning.  It was his 23rd of the season as he continues to hit homeruns at a record pace.  Juan Encarnacion also had a nice game.  He went two for five with three RBIs.  Jason Marquis picked up the win.  He gave up five runs on six hits and one walk in 8 1/3 innings.  Jason Isringhausen got the final two outs to notch his 15th save of the season.

This afternoon’s game ended up a blow out but it started out close.  The Giants were actually up 4-3 but the Cards took the lead in the sixth with two runs.  Then the Cards tacked on four more runs in the seventh to put the game.  Pujols didn’t go yard but he did have two hits.  Adam Wainwright and So Taguchi both hit their first homeruns of the season.

The Reds have won a few games recently, but they’re down to the Brewers by four runs late in the game.  If they lose, we’ll have a nice four game cushion heading into a three game weekend series in San Diego against the Padres.
