It’s not too often that Bob Gibson gives up seven runs in a start and it’s even more rare to walk away from that start with a win, which is what Gibson did because Lou Brock once again went yard twice. Brock went four for five with two homeruns, four runs and three RBIs. The two homeruns brought his season total up to five.
Orlando Cepeda also homered and it was his first of the season. Roger Maris drove in three runs and Curt Flood had two hits, two RBIs and two runs.
Gibson lasted six innings and he gave up the seven runs on ten hits and two walks. Steve Carlton pitched the final three frames and he picked up his first career save. Carlton would finish his Hall of Fame career with only two saves and his next wouldn’t come until twenty years later in 1987 when he played for the Indians.
