Cardinals Blow Out National League Leading Reds

May 24, 1926 at Sportsman’s Park
Cardinals 11, Reds 6  (19-19)

This game looked like it was over early.  The National League leading Reds scored four runs in the first inning and Allen Sothoron was pulled without getting a single batter out.  The Reds added two more in the third and the Cardinals found themselves down by six runs.

They didn’t give up though.  They picked away at the lead with two runs in the sixth.  Then they scored two more in the seventh to make it a two run game.  Then in the top of the eighth, the Cardinals busted out and scored seven runs to put the game away.  Les Bell homered and Taylor Douthit went three for five with a run.  Heinie Mueller and Tommy Thevenow both scored twice.

Jesse Haines picked up the win and pitched a shutout eighth inning.  You also have to give the bullpen some credit.  The Reds didn’t score in the final six frames and that allowed the Cards to mount a comeback.
