Cubs 5, Cardnals 3  (11-8)

The Cardinals lost to their archrivals by giving up a three run lead.  Starter Dick Hughes gave up a run in the sixth and then two in the seventh before Steve Carlton came in and gave up a third run in the seventh that turned out to be the game winner.  It was Carlton’s first loss of the season and he dropped to an even 1-1 record.

Orlando Cepeda homered and drove in two runs in the loss.  Curt Flood doubled, drew a walk and scored two runs.
