Cubs 5, Cardnals 3 (11-8)
The Cardinals lost to their archrivals by giving up a three run lead. Starter Dick Hughes gave up a run in the sixth and then two in the seventh before Steve Carlton came in and gave up a third run in the seventh that turned out to be the game winner. It was Carlton’s first loss of the season and he dropped to an even 1-1 record.
Orlando Cepeda homered and drove in two runs in the loss. Curt Flood doubled, drew a walk and scored two runs.
