Dick Hughes gave up two early runs to the Phillies but he buckled down and threw eight scoreless innings to finish the game up. In all, he gave up just the two runs on four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts and the win pushed his record to 7-2 on the season.
Roger Maris drove in the winning run with a solo homerun in the eighth inning and it was his fifth of the season. Tim McCarver went two for three with a double and a run.
