News, Notes and Historical Information on the St. Louis Cardinals

At least the Cardinals finally won, and at least they’re still in first place. What a stretch though and just what the doctor ordered, we have the worst team in all of baseball this weekend. Hopefully the Cardinals can get the job done this weekend against the Royals.
On Monday, Jason Marquis took a tie game into the fifth and got knocked around. He ended up giving up seven runs on nine hits with three homeruns through six strikeouts. So Taguchi and Scott Rolen had three hits and RBI and a run each in the 10-3 loss.
Tuesday was the antithesis of Monday’s game. Cleveland scored two runs in the first off of Anthony Reyes and that’s all they’d need. Reyes ended up giving up two runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts. David Eckstein had three of the Cardinals’ six hits and drove in the only run in the 3-1 loss.
Yesterday was the win and boy was it exciting. The Cardinals had a 3-1 lead when the Indians scored three in the eighth to take a one run lead. Then in the ninth, Aaron Miles doubled home So Taguchi to tie the game and then Miles scored on Johnny Peralta’s throwing error. It wasn’t pretty, but it counts as a win. A nice start by Chris Carpenter went to waste and Jason Isringhausen picked up the win (despite blowing the save in the eighth).
Time to turn it up. With the All Star break coming, it’d be nice to give the beat up Cardinals some breathing room so hopefully they’ll do that against the Royals.
