News, Notes and Historical Information on the St. Louis Cardinals

What a weird season. Between the extended losing streaks and the lack of real competition in the division, the Cardinals have been hovering. At this point, if we can go on a run, I think we can bury the Reds. On the other hand, if we go on another losing streak, the Cardinals could find themselves on the outside looking in at a playoff spot much less the division.
Monday’s game was a relief. Six different Cardinals went yard with Albert Pujols hitting number 36. He drove in three and scored twice. Jason Marquis threw a decent game and he improved to 13-11. Also give some props to the pen. Four different relievers combined for four shutout innings in the 11-3 win.
The Cardinals came from behind and tied the Cubs in both the eighth and ninth yesterday, but a poor tenth inning by Jason Isringhausen ended up being the difference. Jeff Suppan was roughed up in 4 1/3 innings and Isringhausen dropped his sixth game of the season. Yadier Molina and Chris Duncan both homered in the 5-4 loss.
The Cardinals bounced back today though. Chris Carpenter did his job and picked up win number twelve. Chris Duncan homered again as did Juan Encarnacion. Encarnacion drove in three runs in the 5-3 win and Isringhausen saved his 30th of the season.
Unfortunately, we have a tough matchup this week. The Cardinals travel to New York to take on the New York Mets who are the best team in the National League. The day off tomorrow will be nice though.
