Two runs. That’s all the Dodgers scored in their three game series with the Cardinals. And the Dodgers have had one of the best offenses in the league this year. So now the Cards have a nice even, five game lead over the Reds.
Jeff Suppan and two relievers combined for a six hit shutout on Friday. Suppan improved to 7-5 and Chris Duncan drove in the first of two runs with a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Yesterday was the first of two consecutive 6-1 wins. Jeff Weaver got the job done and put a notch in his belt over his former team. He gave up one run on six hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings. Jim Edmonds, Albert Pujols and Chris Duncan all homered for the Cardinals, and Pujols drove in two.
This afternoon, it was Jason Marquis who held down the Dodgers. He threw eight shutout innings and improved to 12-7 on the season. Juan Encarnacion had a big day and he homered twice. Scott Rolen had two hits and two RBIs.
Next up is a three game set in Colorado. I doubt that we’ll hold them to two runs in that band box, but at this point, the Cardinals just have to keep on winning series so they can keep up the pressure on the Reds.
