News, Notes and Historical Information on the St. Louis Cardinals

Well, the Cardinals passed up those pesky Pirates thanks to a couple of wins over the Cubs and they now find themselves a game and a half (just one loss) back of the first place Brewers. What was at one point a four team race still kind of is, but the Reds are starting to fall out and it looks like the Pirates may be running out of gas. Still, there’s a lot of games to play so this definitely isn’t a time to give up. In fact I’m going to get my Cardinals tickets here in the next couple of days because if this race goes deep into September, tickets could be limited.
The Cardinals have been able to score a bunch of runs and yesterday was no exception. Ryan Theriot and David Freese both drove in three runs in the 13-5 win and both Albert Pujols and Freese went yard in the contest. Theriot finished with four hits to lead the way at the plate.
Kyle Lohse gave up five runs but none of them were earned. He gave up two hits and he walked two in five innings. Three relievers combined to throw four shutout innings to close out the game.
Jake Westbrook gets the nod today as the Cardinals go for the sweep. Then it’s off to Milwaukee for that big series.
