It’s nice to see we finally figured out the Cubs. After some pretty rough series, the Cardinals won last weekend and now this time around, they swept the Cubs in St. Louis. It couldn’t have come at a better time.
On Friday, Jeff Suppan threw one of his best games all season. He gave up five hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings and struck out two. Jason Isringhausen picked up the save and Scott Rolen had two singles, a run and an RBI in the 2-0 win.
Saturday’s game was another close one. Gary Bennett won it in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single. Bennett had also put the Cubs on the board in the third inning with a solo homerun. Chris Carpenter held the Cubs to a single run on two hits in eight innings pitched and got a no decision for his troubles. Flores picked up the win after he pitched a shutout ninth.
Yesterday’s game was runfest after the two previous pitchers duals. The Cards jumped out to a 6-3 lead only to have the Cubs come back and tie it. Then in the ninth, Bennett did it again and he hit a huge walk off grand slam to win it. Jeff Weaver was knocked around in 6 1/3 innings and it was Brandon Looper who picked up the win after a perfect ninth. Juan Encarnacion, Ron Belliard and Aaron Miles all scored twice in the 10-6 win.
The Reds have lost three straight so the Cardinals have pushed themselves back into a three game lead in the division. Next up is three against the Marlins.
