Cardinals Top Robins in Ten Innings

by @ 2:38 am. Filed under 1926 Cardinals Diary - August

August 5, 1926 at Ebbets Field

Cardinals 11, Robins 9  (55-48)

This was a really ugly game.  Flint Rhem appeared to have the game firmly in hand and he had a shutout through five innings.  Then in the sixth, the Robins tagged him for seven runs to give the Robins a 7-5 lead.  The Cards scored a run in the seventh to make it a one run game and then they tied it in the ninth and the game went into extra frames.  In the tenth, the Cardinals broke out for four runs to make it 11-7, but the Robins put two runs across in the bottom half of the inning to make things interesting. Pete Alexander was called in with two outs in the tenth to stop the rally and get the final out.

Billy Southworth had a huge game.  He went three for five with a double, a homerun and three runs.  Rogers Hornsby had three hits including a triple and Bob O’Farrell had three singles and he scored twice.
