Cardinals Win Third Straight, Magic Number Down to One

by @ 4:20 am. Filed under 1967 Cardinals, 1967 Cardinals Diary - September

September 17, 1967 at Crosley Field
Cardinals 3, Reds 2  (94-56)

The Cardinals won their third straight game and in the process, they pushed their magic number down to just one so the Cardinals could clinch the National League pennant as early as tomorrow.  This time it was Nelson Briles, along with the pen, that threw a solid game to give the Cardinals the win.  He gave up one run on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in five innings.  Ron Willis threw the final 3 1/3 innings and held the Reds scoreless to pick up his tenth save of the season.

Julian Javier singled twice and drove in two runs.  Bobby Tolan went two for four with a run.
