Cardinals Blow Out Cubs For Fifth Straight Win

Cardinals 9, Cubs 2  (62-40)

Lou Brock only had one hit but he still managed to play a part in five of the Cardinals nine runs in their fifth straight win.  His one hit was a three run homer and he finished the game with four RBIs and two runs.  Orlando Cepeda homered and drove in three while Curt Flood finished the game with four hits.

Ray Washburn picked up the win and he improved to 7-4 on the season.  He gave up two runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.  Hal Woodeshick closed the game out and held the Cubs scoreless in the final 1 2/3 innings and he picked up his second save of the season.

Roger Maris Drives In Three Runs In Cardinals Fifth Straight Win

The Cardinals won their fifth straight game behind solid team effort at the plate.  Roger Maris had just one hit but he drove in three runs while Curt Flood went two for four with two RBIs and a run. 

Larry Jaster was roughed up for three runs in his start and he didn’t even get through the fourth but the hitters picked him up so he didn’t get a decision.  Ron Willis got a couple batters out and he improved to 3-3 while Joe Hoerner pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief and he picked up his ninth save of the season.

Steve Carlton Throws Eight Shutout Innings In Cardinals Fourth Straight Win

The Cardinals won their fourth straight game and in the process, picked up their 60th win of the season.  Steve Carlton got it done on the mound with eight shutout innings.  He improved to 9-6 and he gave up just five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in eight shutout innings.  Joe Hoerner threw a shutout ninth and he picked up his eighth save of the season.

Most of the Cardinals runs came via the long ball.  Orlando Cepeda and Roger Maris belted solo homeruns while Tim McCarver did the most damage with a three run homer.

Orlando Cepeda Homers Twice In Cardinals Third Straight Win

Orlando Cepeda led the way for the Cardinals in their win over the Braves as the Cardinals started a two series road trip.  Cepeda went three for five with two homeruns, three RBIs and three runs.  Dal Maxvill went four for five with three RBIs.

Dick Hughes improved to 9-3 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up one run on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in the complete game win.

Nelson Briles Pitches Cardinals to Win Over Cubs

Cardinals 4, Cubs 2  (58-40)

Nelson Briles improved to 5-4 on the season with a nice start in the Cardinals win over the Cubs in their series finale.  He gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Julian Javier and Lou Brock provided most of the offense.  Brock picked up three hits and he scored three runs while Julian Javier went three for four with three RBIs and a run.

Cardinals Score Three In the First To Top Cubs

The Cardinals scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as they took care of the Cubs to even up their series.  The Cardinals picked up five hits in that first inning with Tim McCarver capping off the inning with an RBI double.  Orlando Cepeda finished the game with two RBIs and Lou Brock had two hits and two runs.

Ray Washburn improved to 6-4 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts in eight innings of work.  Ron Willis threw a shutout ninth and he picked up his seventh save of the season.

Cardinals Held to Five Hits in Loss to Cubs

The Cardinals picked up just one run as they lost in their series opener against the Cubs.  Orlando Cepeda doubled home Lou Brock in the sixth inning and Brock was the only Cardinal hitter with more then one hit.

Larry Jaster fell to 6-5 on the season with a rough second inning.  In his start, he was picked apart for two runs in the second inning and he didn’t even last through the frame.

Cardinals Take Two In Doubleheader Sweep Over Braves

Julian Javier’s two run homer in the fifth inning was the difference in the Cardinals win in their first game of a doubleheader with the Braves.  Orlando Cepeda was the only Cardinal with two hits and he scored a run.

Steve Carlton improved to 8-6 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up one run on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  Ron Willis got the final four batters out and he picked up his fifth save of the season.

The Cardinals turned on the offense as they finished up a sweep in their doubleheader over the Braves.  Mike Shannon and Phil Gagliano both went yard in the win while Roger Maris doubled, tripled, drove in a run and scored.

Hal Woodeshick picked up the win and he improved to 2-0 on the season.  He gave up one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings.  Ron Willis picked up his sixth save of the season with two shutout innings.

Cardinals Lose to Braves In Thirteen Innings

The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game up and send it into extra frames only to lost it in the thirteenth inning.  Jack Lamabe gave up the losing run in the thirteenth and he fell to 0-6 on the season.

Tim McCarver singled home two runs in the ninth that tied the game up.  Lou Brock went three for six with two doubles, a run and an RBI.

Cardinals Held to Single Run In Loss to Braves

The Cardinals managed only one run on six hits in a tough loss to the Braves.  Orlando Cepeda singled home Roger Maris for the only run in the first inning while Maris was the only Cardinals with two hits in the game.

Nelson Briles took the loss and he fell to 4-4 on the season.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Cardinals Win With Three Homeruns

The Cardinals took care of the Reds for their second straight win and six of the seven runs came on a trio of homeruns.  Orlando Cepeda belted a two run shot and Bobby Tolan sent one over the fence with nobody on base.  The big shot though was a three run homer by Julian Javier to put the Cards on the board in the second inning.

Ray Washburn improved to 5-3 on the season with the win.  He gave up three runs on ten hits with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.  Joe Hoerner threw 3 1/3 shutout innings and he picked up his sixth save of the season.

Cardinals Edge Reds in Twelve Innings

Bobby Tolan drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the twelth to give the Cardinals their winning run in a tight game with the Reds.  The Cardinals needed two runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game up.  Roger Maris went two for six with two RBIs and Mike Shannon singled twice and scored a run.

Ron Willis improved to 2-3 on the season with four shutout innings of relief.  Jack Lamabe pitchd a shutout twelth and he picked up his second save of the season.

Reds 7, Cardinals 4  (52-37)

The Reds scored runs in only one inning but it was a big one as the Cardinals took their fourth loss in five games.  Three different pitchers gave up runs in that inning but it was Jack Lamabe who gave up the game winner.  He fell to 0-5 on the season.  Carlton gave up three runs in the inning before throwing six shutout frames.

Roger Maris and Orlando Cepeda both hit solo homeruns in the loss.  Maris finished the game three for four and Cepeda was three for five.

Mike Shannon Drives In Four Runs In Cardinals Win

The Cardinals snapped their three game losing streak and it was Mike Shannon who provided the bulk of the offense.  He went two for three with a homerun and four RBIs.  Dal Maxvill also had a nice game and he went two for four with a homerun and two RBIs.

Dick Hughes picked up the win and he improved to 8-3 on the season.  He gave up four runs on ten hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.  Nelson Briles got the final batter out and he picked up his sixth save of the season.

Cardinals Swept In Doubleheader To Mets

Ray Washburn was outdueled by Dennis Bennett in the Cardinals second straight loss in the first game of their doubleheader with the Mets.  Washburn fell to 4-4 on the season despite a solid start and he gave up just two runs on four hits and three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Lou Brock singled, stole two bases and scored the only run of the game for the Cardinals.  Julian Javier singled and drove in a run.

July 16, 1967 at Busch Stadium
Mets 8, Cardinals 5  (51-36)

The Cardinals lost their third straight game as the Mets finished up a doubleheader sweep.  This time it was hardly a pitcher’s duel and Jack Lamabe was roughed up in two innings of relief.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and the loss dropped him to 0-4 on the season.

Lou Brock went three for four with a triple, an RBI and two runs.  Roger Maris went two for three and he belted a solo homerun.

Cardinals Lose Game, Bob Gibson

The Cardinals lost more then just a ball game in this one.  In the fourth inning, Bob Gibson was hit on the leg by a come backer and it would eventually be diagnosed as a fracture.  The ace right hander would miss nearly two months recovering from the injury.

Nelson Briles took the loss in this one when he gave up the go ahead run in the eighth inning.  This was after Al Jackson gave up three runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Orlando Cepeda belted a two run homer in the loss.  Roger Maris tripled and drove in a run.

Larry Jaster Pitches Cardinals to Win Over Pirates

Larry Jaster improved to 6-4 on the season with a nice start in the Cardinals win despite the offense picking up just three hits in the entire game.  He gave up one unearned run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Cardinals dropped a tough one to the Pirates and while they reached base eighteen times with seven hits and eleven walks, they stranded eleven batters in the loss.  Bobby Tolan went two for four with a solo homerun and two runs.  Orlando Cepeda singled, drew two walks and drove in a run.

Steve Carlton fell to 7-6 on the season. He gave up four runs (three earned) on ten hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work.

Cardinals Open Up Second Half With 50th Win

The Cardinals blew a 2-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning only to come back and scored two in bottom half of the inning to win it.  The game winning hit came on a two run homer by Mike Shannon.  It was Shannon’s second hit of the game and he finished the game with three RBIs.  Orlando Cepeda singled and scored two runs.

Al Jackson picked up the win and he improved to 6-4 on the season.  He gave up a single hit with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

Ron Willis gave up a homerun in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Cardinals lost their last game of the season half.  It was unfortunate because a solid start by Larry Jaster went to waste.  He gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks in 7 1/3 innings.

Roger Maris went three for five with a run.  Orlando Cepeda went two for five with two RBIs, a run and a stolen base.

Cardinals Win In Twelve For Third Straight Victory

The Cardinals needed twelve innings but they got it done and picked up their third straight win.  The big hit was a three run inside the park homer by Julian Javier in the top of the twelth inning that won it for the Cards.  Javier finished the game four for five with four RBIs.

Nelson Briles picked up the win although he needed to get only batter out to nab it.  He improved to 4-2 on the season and Al Jackson threw a shutout twelth to pick up his first save of the season.

Steve Carlton improved to 7-5 on the season with a very nice start in the Cardinals win their series opener against the Phillies.  He gave up one run on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts in the complete game win.

Julian Javier singled and he drove in three runs in the win.  Tim McCarver singled, drew two walks and scored two runs.

Cardinals Come From Behind to Beat Reds

The Cardinals came back from a two run deficit to beat the Reds by a run and that evened up their four game series at two games a piece.  Julian Javier belted a two run homer in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game up while Orlando Cepeda singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.  Cepeda finished the game with three hits and three RBIs and he belted his eleventh homerun of the season.

Joe Hoerner picked up the win.  He got all five batters he faced out and the win pushed his record to 4-2 on the season.

Cardinals Offense Held in Check In Second Straight Loss to the Reds

The Cardinals got a few more hits (9) then they did yesterday but seven of the team’s nine hits were by two hitters and nobody else could produce.  Orlando Cepeda went four for five and he scored the lone Cardinals run while Tim McCarver went three for four with an RBI.

Nelson Briles took the loss because he gave up the tenth inning run.  A very nice start by Jim Cosman went to waste.  He gave up one run on six hits and three walks with one strikeout in eight innings.

Cardinals Held to Three Hits In Shutout Loss to Reds

Gary Nolan outdueled Larry Jaster as the Cardinals lost a tough pitcher’s duel.  Jaster fell to 5-4 despite not giving up a run until the ninth inning.  He gave up just the one run on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.

The Cardinals got nothing done at the plate.  Three singles and two walks and that was it.  The only hitter to reach base twice was Curt Flood with a single and a walk.

Bob Gibson Strikes Out Twelve in Cardinals Win

Bob Gibson brought his A game as the Cardinals took care of the Reds to open up a four game series.  Gibson gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk with twelve strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  It also probably helped that the Cards spotted Gibson seven runs in the first inning.

Dal Maxvill doubled, drove in two and scored a run.  Roger Maris singled twice, scored a run and drove in one.

Cardinals Split Doubleheader With Mets

A decent start by Dick Hughes went to waste in a decent start in the Cards loss to the Mets.  He gave up three runs on ten hits and one walk with one strikeout in 6 2/3 innings.  Joe Hoerner gave up two runs in his 1 2/3 innings and he took the loss.

Mike Shannon homered and drove in three runs.  Orlando Cepeda went two for three with two walks and a run.

Steve Carlton pitched the Cardinals to a split in their doubleheader and he improved to 6-5 on the season.  He gave up just one run on six hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a complete game.

The Cardinals won this on only six hits by six different hitters but five of those six hits were for extra base hits.  Julian Javier tripled, drove in one and scored a run.
