The Cardinals are World Champs and while I’m waiting for the 2011 World Series set to come out, I was happy to see that the Cardinals made the cut with another great game in the Baseball Greatest Games set. In 1985, the Cardinals played the Dodgers in the NLCS and after going down two games to none, the Cardinals came back and won two straight before an important game five.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first but the Dodgers tired it in the fourth. A classic pitchers duel between Fernando Valenzuela and Bob Forsch and the Cardinals pen but in the bottom of the ninth, the heroics came from an unlikely person. The light hitting Ozzie Smith belted a walk off solo home run to win it for the Cardinals. They then won games six to move on to the World Series where they eventually lost to the Royals. Still, that Ozzie Smith home run is one that’s going to be talked about for a long time to come.
