Cardinals Lead Best of Seven Game Series 3-2

The Cardinals failed to lock up the World Series as once again Jim Lonborg held the Cardinals’ hitters in check.  It wasn’t as bad as the one hit shutout he threw in game two, but the Cardinals managed just a run on three hits.  Roger Maris had two of the three hits and he drove in the lone run with a solo homer in the ninth inning.

Steve Carlton threw a nice game but it wasn’t enough.  He gave up just one unearned run on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings.  Ron Willis was tagged for two runs without getting a single batter out but Carlton took the loss because he gave up the earlier run.

Game six would shift the stage back to Fenway Park.  The Red Sox still had a tough task with the need to win two straight but they’d at least get to do it at home.
