The Cardinals came one step closer to clinching the National League pennant as they took care of the Mets behind a solid outing by Nelson Briles. He improved to 11-5 and he gave up one unearned run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in the complete game win.
Mike Shannon belted a solo shot, his eleventh of the season. Curt Flood singled and he drove in two runs.
