Best of Seven Game Series Tied 1-1

Jim Lonborg was hands down the best pitcher in the American League as is indicated by his near unanimous choice as the Cy Young winner.  His hot pitching also seemed to extend into the World Series because he pitched the Red Sox to a 1-1 tie in their series with the Cardinals.  Julian Javier broke up Lonborg’s no hitter in the eighth inning with a single.  The only other baserunner the Cardinals could manage was a walk by Curt Flood in the seventh inning.

Carl Yastrzemski tagged both Dick Hughes and Joe Hoerner for homeruns.  Hughes took the loss despite a decent outing.  He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.  Willis was touched up for two runs in the seventh and then Hoerner was tagged for one.

The scene would now shift to St. Louis.  Game three would be in two days.
