The Cardinals five game winning streak came to an end as Phillies start Chris Short held the Cardinals in check at the plate. Cards hitters managed just four hits and the lone run came on a solo homerun by Ed Spiezio.
Steve Carlton took the loss despite an impressive individual performance. He gave up three runs on eight hits and three walks with an awesome sixteen strikeouts in the complete game loss.
