The Cardinals magic number was down to nine behind an impressive start by Steve Carlton, who improved to 13-8 on the season.  He gave up just seven hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in the complete game shutout.

Lou Brock went two for four with a triple, two RBIs and a run.  Carlton also helped out his own cause with two hits, a run and an RBI.
